With this fall list, which triples the size
of previous seasons, Winedale confirms
its aspirations for growth, building
upon the small but solid success of its
first two years. In keeping with our
intention of publishing no more than two
to four books annually, Winedale remains
small in order to lavish on each manuscript
a high level of editorial attention.
This season demonstrates our continued
concentration in creative nonfiction,
although we remain on the lookout for
opportunities to publish works of literary
fiction. We hope eventually to present a
balanced list in both areas, comprised of work
from new writers as well as from established
writers whose material does not fit the
financial parameters of the New York publishing
establishment. We will also be coming out from time
to time with reprints of selected titles, both
national and regional.
We continue to emphasize promotion of our authors
and their works as a vital part of our business.
Last season?s Ordinary Paradise, a heart-
wrenching memoir of recovery from grief by
Laura Furman, was a featured fall book
in both Self and Elle magazines. It attracted
positive reviews from the Boston Globe and New
York Times, along with major Texas papers.
Furman?s book tour included, among other venues,
two spring '99 appearances in New York City.
In the area of backlist, Leon Hale's Home Spun,
which sold out its first printing of ten
thousand within a few months, will be available
once more this fall in its second printing.
At the same time, we are pleased to announce that
Winedale will be releasing newly bound copies of
one of Hale's most popular backlist books, which
we have taken over from Shearer Publishing. This
is the delightful memoir, Paper Hero, which has
been out of print for some time. It represents the
first step in Winedale's program to keep our
authors' major backlist titles in print and
available to readers.
