Over There
A Marine in the Great War
by Carl Andrew Brannen
Preface and Annotations by Rolfe L. Hillman, Jr.,
and Peter F. Owen
Afterword by J. P. Brannen
"[Brannen's] battlefield snapshots combine with outstanding annotations by Hillman and Owen to enhance this first-rate front-line memoir . . . Unlike many retrospective works on war, this one does not embellish its author's memories."—Publishers WeeklyC. A. Brannen and the twentieth century left their adolescence behind when World War I erupted. Based on C. A. Brannen's memories recorded in the 1930s and photographs he took, Over There describes his experiences in every major action of the 4th Marine Brigade, which saw more fighting than any other American unit.
Seventy-five years after the war, the author's son J. P. retraced his father's footsteps across France. The photographs he took on those erstwhile battlegrounds evoke the ghosts of the past and allow father and son to march together through the battle-fronts of Belleau Woods in the Château-Thierry sector, Soissons, Pont-a-Mousson, St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont Ridge, and the Meuse-Argonne. J. P. Brannen's afterword to Over There is a moving tribute to his family's veterans.
The Brannens' story should fascinate all those interested in World War I and touch the hearts of other families who have been touched by war. With the added scholarship of the late military historian Rolfe L. Hillman, Jr., and of Peter F. Owen, a Marine Corps officer, Over There also is a valuable contribution to the military history of World War I.
The late CARL ANDREW BRANNEN was a nineteen-year-old student at Texas A&M University when he joined the Marines. At the end of the war, he earned a place on Pershing's Honor Guard. He later earned two degrees in history and had a long career as a schoolteacher and administrator. J. P. BRANNEN earned his bachelor's degree at Texas A&M University and his doctorate at the University of Texas. He spent many years on the staff of the Sandia National Laboratories. Now retired, he lives in Cedar Crest, New Mexico.
