Texas Almanac 2008-2009, 64th Edition
Edited by Elizabeth Cruce Alvarez and Robert Plocheck
The Texas Almanac has been the ultimate resource about life in
Texas for 150 years. First published in 1857, the Texas Almanac
2008–2009 is the book’s 64th Edition.
Printed in full color on glossy paper, the Texas Almanac includes
over 245 color photos from the Gulf of Mexico to the West Texas
mountains and color relief maps of Texas and each of Texas’ 254
counties. These unique county maps show relief, major and minor
roads, waterways, parks, and other attractions. Each county map
is accompanied by a profile outlining that county's history, physical
features, recreation, population and economy.
The Texas Almanac also includes articles and data about history
and government; population and demographics; the natural
environment; parks, sports and recreation; business and
transportation; oil and minerals; agriculture; science and health;
education; and culture and the arts. It even includes a pronunciation
guide to Texas town and county names.
Special features in the 64th Edition include:
- An overview of archeology in Texas with a list of unique sites
to visit and a map to locate landmarks and museums.
- A history of stagecoach travel on the Texas frontier, important
in transporting people, mail and goods across the state.
- A look at the Civilian Conservation Corps in Texas, which
developed 56 state, national and local parks between 1933
and 1942.
- A history of Cajuns in Texas, who arrived in the bayou country
of Southeast Texas in the 1840s and have moved into the
urban areas to influence our culture throughout the state.
- A history of minor league baseball in Texas.
- An expanded Recreation and Sports sections that includes:
a complete listing of UIL football teams, with the championship
game scores going back to the first game in 1920;
championship teams and scores for boys and girls basketball
beginning with the first game in 1921; and a complete list of
honorees in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and Texas Olympic
medalists.
The Texas Almanac Teacher's Guide will be available in fall 2007 to
download from the Texas Almanac website: www.texasalmanac. com. The Teacher's Guide is a collection of professionally written
teaching tools to help teachers and homeschoolers use the factually
dense Texas resource in the classroom. It contains fun and instructive
interdisciplinary activities based on information found in the Texas
Almanac 20082009. Each lesson is coded to indicate how it helps
fulfill TEKS and TAKS objectives.
