Raves for debut collection
A Complicated Situation |
"Graceful, easy stories . . . very seductive. 'Holly's Landing' might be the most beautiful story I've read this year."—Barry Hannah"Wonderful evocations of the way we live now and have lived for the past half century. Jane Mullen's voice is as true as a tuning fork. Her characters come to full life in their tangled situations and with their noble or dubious motives. This is a collection no one should miss."—Ellen Douglas
"Like a fine songwriter, Jane Mullen sings all the right notes to her own riffs. . . . You can't ask any more from a writer than what has been delivered in this book, a good and honorable debut."—Larry Brown
"These are patient, clear-sighted and intense stories. They reward the reader with fine observation, meticulous intelligence, and most importantly, with great compassion for human drama—as it is by us all—routinely lived."—Richard Ford
"Wonderful stories filled with voices I heard long after the reading was over. A remarkable debut."—John Grisham
"In these beautifully crafted stories, Jane Mullen routinely distills from the commonplace the heady and authentic stuff of life. That's quite a feat, and this is a splendid collection."—T. R. Pearson
"I am very glad to have discovered the remarkably subtle talent of Jane Mullen. Each of the stories presents a different family of characters, but these families add up to one strained American family engulfed in the same problem—love passing, marriages breaking up, rocking and shadowing forever a world that once seemed whole. And all this is recounted with the most delicate, sensitive, whimsical touch. I am moved and deeply impressed. Jane Mullen is a real find."—Alfred Kazin
