Hitting into the Wind
Stories by Bill Meissner
"Meissner has created his own delightful Field of Dreams in this book."— W. P. KinsellaIn his debut collection of thirty stories, Bill Meissner focuses on a diversity of subjects that reach beyond the national pastime and touch the human heart: love and friendship, the father-son relationship, the dreams of youth, the struggles of growing up and growing old.
Cameo appearances by baseball greats Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Kirby Puckett are sprinkled liberally throughout, but unknown (fictional) ballplayers dealing with life’s larger issues as well as day-to-day struggles with their game anchor the collection. Meissner’s stories appeal both to baseball aficionados and to those who’ve never heard of the infield fly rule.
"A storyteller with remarkable gifts."—Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Hitting into the Wind was first published by Random House in 1994.
