From Uncertain to Blue
Photographs by Keith Carter
Introduction by Horton Foote

"Keith Carter . . . finds irony in everyday doings too familiar for most to notice," commented Anne W. Tucker of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, "yet [he] knows that funny things are often also touching."

In his first book, Keith Carter began a photographic journey that has won him international acclaim. The classic purity of his early work—images from tiny Texas burgs with picturesque names—beckons with a presence that has "another dimension, a beauty you can't easily be rid of," notes Horton Foote in his introduction.

First published in 1988 by Texas Monthly Press and now available exclusively from Texas A&M University Press, From Uncertain to Blue was the product of Beaumont-based photographer Keith Carter's exploration of the back roads of Texas. Accompanying Carter on his journeys was his wife Pat, whose travel notes conclude the book.

The photographs show what Texas book reviewer Judyth Rigler called Carter's "feeling for the unique, the forgotten, the overlooked." Each duotone photograph faces a white page with the name of the town where it was taken. In Tuxedo (pronounced TUX-a-dough), sheets are billowing on a clothesline with chickens scratching in their shade. In Marathon, an ancient picket fence is adorned with deer horns and skulls, a steeple and volcanic mesa punctuate the horizon, and empty bottles drift in the foreground shadows. In Valentine, a large-eyed little girl clutches a doll to her chest.

KEITH CARTER's photographs have been exhibited at galleries throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe. His work has appeared in such publications as Texas Monthly, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, and Rolling Stone. His most recent books are Bones and Heaven of Animals. He lives in Beaumont, Texas.
