Collaboration with Distinguished Professor and Welsh Chair A.E. Johnson, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Genetics, College of Medicine: Mechanistic insights into the integration and potential sorting out the endoplasmic reticulum membrane of a viral envelope protein that accumulates in viral-induced membranes within the nucleus.

Goals of proposed research:
  • to confirm the process and compare the protein interactions occurring in the core of the translocon during viral integral membrane protein primary insertion.

  • to assess if there are potential accessory proteins that function with the translocon during the sorting process, and to attempt identification of these proteins.

  • to interrogate the functional domains of a signature motif that is sufficient to target integral membrane proteins to nuclear membranes.
