About the Series

In the fall of 1998, Texas A&M University initiated the University Distinguished Lecture Series as a forum to present distinguished scholars from an array of disciplines. The Lecture series is directed by the University Distinguished Lecture Series Committee, which reports to the Interim Executive Vice President and Provost and is composed of faculty members from each of the Colleges and from the General Libraries as well as representatives from Student Government and the Graduate Student Council, the Distinguished Professors, the Council of Principal Investigators, and the Texas A&M Press.

Building on the University Lecture series, which each year featured scholarly presentations by members of the faculty of Texas A&M University , the University Distinguished Lecture Series added a series of lectures by renown individuals from outside of the University. During the inaugural season, the University Distinguished Lecture Series presented lectures by: Dr. Robert Ballard, oceanographer and undersea explorer; Dr. Michael DeBakey, cardiovascular surgeon; Dr. Sherwood Rowland, Nobel laureate in chemistry; Dr. Paul Sereno, a National Geographic Explorer in Residence and well known paleontologist; Ms. Rita Dove, former Poet Laureate of the United States, and distinguished members of the Texas A&M University faculty.

The lecturers are selected by a committee of faculty members representing each of Texas A&M University's colleges and the George Bush School of Government and Public Service, and the General Libraries, as well as representatives from Student Government and the Graduate Student Council, the Distinguished Professors, the Council of Principal Investigators, and the Texas A&M Press. A list of the committee members for 2006-2007 is located here.
