Appendix I: Checklist of Steps to Fulfill Master’s Degree

___ Review history department requirements (preferably with the Associate Director of Graduate Studies).

___ Select your chair and, in consultation with the chair, select the committee.

___ In consultation with your chair, decide if you will complete a Thesis or Non-thesis MA degree.

____ Review degree plan with committee. Submit your degree plan electronically to OGS by the end of your third semester.

___ Complete the course work outlined on your degree plan.

Thesis candidates:

___ Submit the Proposal Title Page for Thesis form.

___ Be sure to consult with your committee members while you write your thesis. They will review a draft of your thesis once it is complete.

___ After you have made the needed corrections, apply for your degree during the first week of the semester in which you plan to graduate.

      You must be enrolled at the university during the semester you plan to graduate (this is important to remember if you graduate in August.)

___ Schedule an exam time with your committee members. Notify Associate Director of Graduate Studies that you have scheduled your exams.

___ Submit Request for Final Examination form.

___ Reserve a room through the department’s front office.

___ After you have successfully defended your thesis, submit the Written Thesis Approval form to the Thesis Office. Remind your chair

      to submit the Report of Final Examination form to OGS.

___ Take a draft of you thesis to the Thesis Office for a preliminary review. Make the suggested changes.

___ Upload one PDF file of your manuscript to the Thesis Office. Make any necessary formatting corrections and resubmit. Once the Thesis Office

      approves the manuscript, you are done!

___ If you plan to continue as a PhD student, submit a Letter of Intent.

Non-Thesis candidates

Once you have completed your course work, schedule an exam time with your committeemembers. Notify the Associate Director of

Graduate Studies that you have scheduled your exams.

___ Submit Request for Final Examination form to OGS.

___ Reserve rooms and a laptop (if necessary) through the department’s front office.

___ After you have passed your written and oral exams, remind your chair to submit the Report of Final Examination form to OGS.

___ If you plan to continue as a PhD candidate, submit the Letter of Intent.

 

Appendix II: Checklist of Steps to Fulfill Doctoral Degree

___ Review history department requirements (preferably with the Associate Director of Graduate Studies) and chart your course work.

___ Select your chair and, in consultation with the chair, select the committee.

____ Review degree plan with committee. Submit your degree plan electronically to OGS by the end of your third semester.

___ Complete the course work outlined on your degree plan. Prepare for Comprehensive Exams.

When you are ready to take your ‘comps’:

___ Schedule a time with your committee members. Notify Associate Director of Graduate Studies that you have scheduled your exams.

___ Reserve rooms and a laptop (if necessary) with the department’s front office.

___ Download two forms needed for the exam from the OGS website: the Preliminary Exam Checklist and Report of the Preliminary Exam.

      Be sure to complete all the steps on the checklist.

___ After passing the exam, be sure to submit these two forms to OGS within 10 working days.

___ Prepare Dissertation Proposal. Submit Proposal for Dissertation or Record of Study form to OGS via the Associate Director of Graduate Studies.

___ During the first week of your final semester, apply for your degree and pay the graduation fee.

___ When you have completed your dissertation, submit the Request for Permission to Hold Final Exam form to OGS.

___ After the defense, ask your chair if he/she received the Report of Final Examination form from OGS. Remind your chair to submit that form after the defense.

___ Submit the Written Dissertation Approval Form to the Thesis Office.

___ Take a draft of your dissertation to the Thesis Office for a preliminary review.

___ Make the suggested changes.

___ Upload one PDF file of your dissertation to the Thesis Office. Make any necessary formatting corrections and resubmit. Once the

      Thesis Office approves the manuscript, you are done!
