Engel, who received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 2003, specializes in the religious history of early America, particularly in the mid-Atlantic region.  Her current book project, Of Heaven and Earth: Religion and Economic Activity Among Bethlehem's Moravians, explores how religious actors responded to eighteenth-century economic change.  Her future work will explore religion and community in the early American backcountry.
