A native of West Texas, Walter Buenger received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 1979 and began teaching at Texas A&M University that same year. He teaches courses in U.S. History, The History of the South, and Texas History. Five students have received a Ph.D. under his direction and ten students have received an M.A. His own research focuses on comparative border studies, the South, and Texas since 1820, and he has written or edited numerous books and articles. His most recent book, The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas Between Reconstruction and the Great Depression won the Coral H. Tullis Award for the best book on Texas published in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association.
