Bradford specializes in naval, maritime, and early American history.  He has taught in Malaysia and been a visiting professor at the Air War College, in addition to teaching study abroad courses in France, Germany, Italy, and England.  He is the editor of The Papers of John Paul Jones, several volumes of essays, and The Library of Naval Book Biography book series. A founding member of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, he was executive director of the organization, 1995-2004, chairs the book prize committee of the North American Society for Oceanic History, co-edits the book series New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archeology, and served on the editorial board of The Northern Mariner. His most recent publication is the Atlas of American Military History, and his International Encyclopedia of Military History is currently in press.
