Bradford grew up in northern Michigan, received degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Virginia, and specializes in naval, maritime, and early American history.  He has taught in Malaysia and been a visiting professor at the Air War College, in addition to teaching study abroad courses in France, Germany, Italy, and England.  He is the editor of The Papers of John Paul Jones, several volumes of essays, and The Library of Naval Biography book series. He serves as president of the North American Society for Ocean History. A founding member of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, he was executive director of the organization, 1995-2004, co-edits the book series New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archeology, and serves on the editorial board of The Northern Mariner. His most recent publications include the Atlas of American Military History (2003), the International Encyclopedia of Military History (2006), and A Companion to American military History (2010).
