About Convocation

Freshman Convocation will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. Freshman Convocation is the official beginning of a new students entry into Texas A&M University.

Freshman Convocation is a 45-60 minute ceremony that welcomes freshman to Texas A&M University's community of learners in a manner similar to the community’s recognition of students’ graduation at commencement. The University President will formally welcome freshman and a faculty speaker will provide remarks to students to inspire them to make their Texas A&M education a life changing experience.

Along with formally welcoming students to the beginning of their academic career at Texas A&M University, Freshman Convocation will recognize the impact the freshman make on the community of learners, which includes faculty and staff. With all of the freshman assembled in one place, the students will gain a sense of the size, strength, and identity of their class and provide them with an important connection to one another and to the University. Faculty from each academic department, the University president, vice presidents, and provosts, in full academic regalia, will represent the University’s involvement and commitment to the new members of the community of learners.

As the University welcomes students at Freshman Convocation, it also desires to instill in students the value of their education and the significance of their inclusion in the community of learners throughout their academic career. Freshman Convocation is held in Reed Arena to provide students with the opportunity to begin their college career in the same, significant, positive manner in which they end their college career. Graduation also occurs in the same setting and in the same manner as Freshman Convocation. Both are significant academic milestones at the beginning and the end of our student’s undergraduate experience.
