Each student will write a one paragraph summary of each activity,
these summaries will be turned into student’s ESP Coordinator
prior to the last day of the semester. Total number of activities
should be at least 5, including seminars in the student’s
degree program, seminars outside of the student’s degree program
and individual faculty meetings. Scheduling of the visits with faculty
and seminars will be handled by each student.
Each student will be required to submit a research proposal. Proposals
should consist of not more than ten pages double-spaced including
cover, text, drawings, references, endorsements, schedule, etc.
The document is your proposal to a faculty researcher (usually drafted
with his input), describing the problem you have identified to work
on, some background (a summary of previous work related to this
problem), your approach and your expectations. If research funds
are needed, you should provide a brief budget with estimated costs.
Each student will give a (7 minute + 3 minutes questions) technical
presentation. A final copy is to be submitted to Dr. Ray James the
day of the presentation. On the days of presentations, class may
be extended to accommodate the presentations. Also during this time
the presentations will be evaluated by the ESP Coordinators. The
presentation is a PowerPoint assisted presentation of the highlights
of your proposal, presented as if to a committee who will be deciding
whether to authorize and/or fund your proposal. Probably you should
highlight the importance of the problem (the benefits of having
a workable solution), the current state of knowledge about the problem,
the methodology you propose to apply in your study, and the required
funding, if any is needed.
