The molecular sculpture of (North)-methanocarba-thymidine shown above has been executed in pear wood.
It is a gift to Prof. Dr. Gerd Folkers, in appreciation for his help on many occasions, especially for writing a letter to the US National Science Foundation in support of the proposal to fund research in molecular modelling and sculpting.

The title compound is bound in the active site of the enzyme, herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase.
The crystal structure was determined by A.Prota, J.Vogt, B.Pilger, R.Perozzo, C.Wurth, V.Marquez, P.Russ, G.E.Schulz, G.Folkers & L.Scapozza and published in BIOCHEMISTRY 39:  9597 (2000).
