Study Abroad Programs
As a university with a long and proud history of
international programs, Texas A&M University is deeply committed to providing
100 percent access to international education opportunities for all students.
In the globally interconnected 21st century, the ability to engage successfully
across cultures and the development of international leadership skills are
crucial to the future work force.
The mission of the Texas A&M University Study
Abroad Program is to provide students in all fields of study, at all levels,
a wide variety of educational experiences abroad. These include group study
programs, individual reciprocal exchange programs, language training, internships,
work abroad, leadership programs and information on foreign travel.
Students wanting to add this critical
international dimension to their Texas A&M degrees should begin financial,
academic and language planning early in their academic careers. To obtain
e-mail updates about programs and scholarships, see the study abroad website.
Summer Study Abroad Programs
These programs are offered by Texas A&M faculty
for Texas A&M students. Each summer 20-25 programs take Aggies around
the world for study, with special concentration in Texas A&M's areas
of geographic priority: Mexico, Latin America, Asia and Europe. Programs
vary each year and registration begins a year in advance of program dates.
Most programs are taught in English. Summer programs always include offerings
at the Texas A&M overseas site in Italy.
Every year the Department of Modern and Classical
Languages offers programs in Germany, France, Russia, Mexico and Spain.
These programs require one year of college-level course work in the language
of the host country before participating in the program.
Courses of Study at Santa Chiara Study Center in Italy
The Texas A&M University Study Abroad Center,
Santa Chiara, is located in the small medieval town of Castiglion Fiorentino,
Italy. For more than a decade, the Center has provided Texas A&M students
and faculty the opportunity to live in and learn about another culture.
The Center, located south of Florence in Tuscany,
offers year-round programs for Texas A&M students in a variety of subjects,
including Arts and Italian. All programs include an Arts and Civilization
course which is pivotal to every other subject studied. Summer session
programs last approximately five weeks; spring and fall semester programs
last 15 weeks. All are open to students from all majors. Courses are taught
by Texas A&M faculty and are enhanced by specialized guests lectures
and field trips. Special programs for faculty, former students and pre-freshman
honor students have also been among the offerings at the Santa Chiara Center.
Financial Aid for Study Abroad Programs
Typically students receiving federal financial
aid for on-campus study may use their aid for study abroad. Each case is
handled individually with the student and a Financial Aid counselor. There
are also currently three scholarships specifically for study abroad, including
the International Education Fee Scholarship and the Association of Former
Students and Barnes and Noble Bookstore Study Abroad Fellowships. Information
about these and other opportunities can be found in the Study Abroad Programs
Office.
Perry Study Abroad Program Office Reference Library
Other options exist for students, such as internships,
work abroad, language study at approved institutes and specialized study
abroad through other institutions. The Transfer Agreement Form also facilitates
credit transfer issues in advance of the study abroad experience, if necessary,
and the Study Abroad Program Office provides advising for students on program
choices. The office also provides information on general travel and volunteer
work abroad, and International Student ID and American Youth Hostel Cards.
The Council Travel and BUNAC Work Abroad programs assist students in obtaining
work permits in various countries. Students are then responsible for finding
their own employment overseas. International internships are available
in a few locations; usually students who are fluent in the language of
the country where they would like to work are the best candidates for these
programs.
Fulbright Grants for Graduate Study Abroad
The Study Abroad Program is the designated office
to facilitate U.S. citizen applications from graduate students and graduating
seniors for Fulbright Grants. These prestigious awards are designed to
assist new scholars with the cost of individual international research
projects. Applications are called for in summertime, reviewed by a University
committee in the fall, and sent forth for national competition in October.
Successful applicants are funded for the next academic year.
National Security Education Program (NSEP)
The National Security Education Program was created
to assist students who are U.S. citizens with the cost of study abroad
programs in non-traditional locations. NSEP scholars may travel to any
country outside of the United States, Western Europe or Canada. Applications
are especially encouraged from students in the sciences, engineering, and
agriculture, and for the study of less-commonly taught languages.
Admission
Application for summer, fall and spring programs

segments of the University community. Among the many services offered are
prearrival information, orientation, international student employment information,
cross-cultural programming, personal advising, administration of scholar-ships
