Resources for Students
Memorial Student Center/Texas A&M’s College Union
The Memorial Student Center (MSC) is a living memorial to Aggies who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. The MSC is Texas A&M University’s student union and serves as the focal point for campus community—students, faculty, administration, former students and guests. The MSC is a department that offers a variety of programs, services, facilities and leadership development opportunities that provides students with first hand experience in citizenship, educating them in leadership, social responsibility and values.
The MSC is where all members of the Aggie family can come together and feel at home. It is a place where Former Students recall days past, visitors learn A&M traditions and current students create memories that last a lifetime.
The MSC provides a number of essential services and facilities for the University community: meeting rooms, dining facilities, three art galleries, a frame and craft shop, bookstore, ticket office, spacious lounges, recreation area with bowling and billiards, ballrooms, the Student Organizations Finance Center, a copy center and the Student Programs Office.
As the center of the college community life, the MSC complements the academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, entertainment, social and recreational programs. The MSC offers a learning environment which complements a student’s academic journey, enhances the quality of life at Texas A&M and helps train students to become effective citizens of the world. The MSC is committed to developing persons as well as intellects.
Last year more than 1,500 students involved in the MSC produced more than 1,200 programs and events which attracted an audience of nearly 450,000 people—mostly their fellow students. Any student can become involved by attending a program or by participating in the planning and organizing of these events.
Being involved in an MSC committee gives students many unique opportunities that enhance their academic experience. In the process of selecting programs, they evaluate artists, speakers, entertainers and a variety of other program resources. Students assess the market to determine if a program will be of significant interest to the campus community to justify the expense of booking that event. Through the program development process MSC student leaders accept major responsibilities, produce professional quality programs, learn to establish productive working relationships and become part of the MSC network of current and former students. While being involved in the MSC students gain skills that will give them a competitive edge on their colleagues when it comes to the job search. The MSC experience will give students a chance to gain life-long friendships while having a lot of fun.
The following MSC committees are housed in the Student Programs office located on the 2nd floor of the MSC above the bookstore: Abbott Family Leadership Conference, Aggie Leaders of Tomorrow (ALOT), Committee for the Awareness of Mexican-American Culture (CAMAC), Fall Leadership Conference, Freshmen in Hosting and Service (FISH), Hospitality, J. Wayne Stark Northeast Trip, L.T. Jordan Institute for International Awareness, LEAD, OPAS, Student Conference on National Affairs (SCONA), Spencer Leadership Conference, Spring Leadership Trip, Town Hall, Visual Arts Committee, Wiley Lecture Series, Woodson Black Awareness Committee (WBAC) and the Champe Fitzhugh, Jr. International Honors Leadership Seminar.
In addition to the opportunities afforded students through programming committees, the MSC Council also has academic resource areas to help students develop professional business skills: marketing, development, assessment and finance, diversity, human resources and facilities and services.
