102. American Mass Media. (3-0). Credit 3.

Introductory survey of mass communication media, their history and social role, to provide an understanding of the development and importance of mass communication media in modern society. Prerequisite: Freshman or sophomore classification, or approval of program coordinator.

200. Mass Media Information. (3-0). Credit 3.

Strategies and procedures in identifying, gathering, analyzing and organizing information for the mass media; sources and methods; evaluation and validation of evidence; legal and ethical considerations. Prerequisite: JOUR 102. Freshman or sophomore classification, or approval of program coordinator.

203. Media Writing I. (2-3). Credit 3.

Basic journalistic techniques common to all media; integration of news gathering, writing and editing; ethics. Limited to minors in journalism, or with approval of program coordinator. Prerequisites: JOUR 102 and 200 as well as passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test and proficiency in typing.* Freshman or sophomore classification, or approval of program coordinator.

225. Television Production I. (2-3). Credit 3.

Theoretical background and practical application of television production; bridges a variety of techniques applied to both commercial and educational fields; lectures and student production interwoven to produce comprehensive understanding of the medium. Prerequisites: JOUR 102 or 200 or approval of instructor; sophomore classification.

301. Mass Communication, Law and Society. (3-0). Credit 3.

Mass media as social institutions; social responsibility and ethics of the press; history, constitutional development, and law of the First Amendment. Prerequisite: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Junior classification and majors only or approval of instructor.*

302. Graphics. (2-3). Credit 3.

Graphic design for printed media; visual principles, their application in printed media and laboratory practice in their execution; work with newspapers, magazines, newsletters and brochures. Prerequisites: Sophomore classification and 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203 (or approval of instructor). Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

303. Media Writing II. (2-3). Credit 3.

Interpretative news gathering and writing for various media; basic communication law and ethics; assigned practice on campus or other publications. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203 with a passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test and proficiency in typing.* Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

304. Editing for the Mass Media. (2-2). Credit 3.

Principles and practice of editing including: improving and tightening print and broadcast copy; writing headlines, titles and subheads; photo editing and cutlines; graphics and layout. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203 and passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test.* Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

305. Magazine Writing. (2-3). Credit 3.

General, specialized and trade magazines, house organs and supplements, and their role in mass communication, writing of magazine articles; identifying potential markets; writing for specific markets. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203 with a passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test and proficiency in typing. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

306. Publications Management. (3-0). Credit 3.

Business and production methods and management in the print media; analysis of print media management functions in the areas of advertising, business, circulation, editorial, personnel, production and promotion. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor.*

309. Magazine Editing and Production. (2-3). Credit 3.

Planning and editing consumer and specialized magazines; problems of magazine layout, design and makeup; publishing techniques and procedures; individual projects in magazine editing and advanced magazine writing. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203, JOUR 210 or approval of instructor; passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test.* Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

310. Newspaper Editing and Production. (2-3). Credit 3.

Principles and practice of news editing and production; use of video display terminals and related electronic editing equipment. Laboratory assignment on campus publications. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203, JOUR 210 or approval of instructor; passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

311. Radio and Television News Writing. (2-3). Credit 3.

Study and analysis of basic methods of writing for radio and television; techniques required in processing news copy, pictures and tape; guidance in newsroom operation, news gathering, taping news, scripting and editing, handling equipment. Prerequisites: JOUR 102 and 200 and 203 with 2.50 GPR and passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test and proficiency in typing or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator .*

312. Television Newscasting. (2-3). Credit 3.

Content and production considerations to produce a daily television newscast; original news reporting with electronic news gathering equipment and other techniques such as film, slides and studio effects; basic methods of writing for broadcast; techniques required in processing news copy, pictures, and tape scripting and editing. Prerequisite: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

313. Photojournalism I. (2-3). Credit 3.

Fundamentals and practice of photojournalism for print media; taking and printing black-and-white and color; production of pictures and cutlines for publication; basic photo editing. Assigned practice on campus or other publications. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

314. Photojournalism II. (2-3). Credit 3.

Fundamentals and practices of photojournalism for print media. Photojournalism as a news reporting technique; special techniques in taking and printing black-and-white and color news pictures; lighting control; studio work for editorial and advertising illustration; assigned production for newspaper use. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of instructor.*

315. Multimedia Concepts and Practice for Mass Media. (3-0). Credit 3.

Multimedia: the combination of animation, graphics, text, sound and video with user interactivity; projects directed toward the production of computer presentations and interactive kiosks; techniques discussed include computer animation, graphics, the production and use of digital photographs and digitizing sound and video. Prerequisite: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of instructor.

316. Graphics II. (3-0). Credit 3.

Practice, discussion and readings on how typography, images and design principles are used in all aspects of journalism; conception and execution of finished layouts culminating in presentation of a portfolio. Prerequisites: JOUR 102, 200, 203 or 302; 2.50 GPR; majors only or approval of instructor.

321. Theory and Practice of Publishing. (3-0). Credit 3.

Development, organization, operation, economics, content, controls, effects of printed mass media; techniques of acquisition, selection, editing of manuscripts; book design and production; budgets, finance contracts; management; trends in publishing; use of Internet as resource tool for information as medium of distribution of information. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

322. Theory and Practice of Broadcasting. (3-0). Credit 3.

Principles, practices, history, organization of broadcast media and their roles in society as social force and product of social forces; study of innovations that changed broadcast media and influenced society; use of Internet as resource tool for information, as medium of distribution of information, and as medium for advertising. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

323. Theory and Practice of Advertising. (3-0). Credit 3.

Principles, theory, practice of advertising; social and economic roles and functions of advertising in all media, including the Internet; use of the Internet as a resource tool for information, as medium of distribution of information, and as medium for advertising. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

324. Theory and Practice of Public Relations. (3-0). Credit 3.

Nature of communication, public opinion, persuasion; selection of publics; combining research with action; communication, evaluation; use of all media, including the Internet as a resource tool for information and as medium of distribution of information; analysis of various fields of public relations. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.

326. Television Production. (2-3). Credit 3.

Theoretical background and practical application of television production; techniques of producing and directing television programs; creative uses of the medium in complex production situations; color studio design, sets, lighting, visual effects, post-production editing and remote location recording. Prerequisite: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

356. Public Relations Case Studies. (3-0). Credit 3.

Analysis and evaluation of public relations cases; planning and execution of public relations activities; applied and alternative communications approaches. Prerequisite: JOUR 324 or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

357. Public Relations Media. (2-3). Credit 3.

Fundamentals in writing, editing and producing materials used in public relations communication. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203; passing grade on grammar-spelling-punctuation test and proficiency in typing. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

360. Advertising Copy and Layout. (2-3). Credit 3.

Creative aspects of print media advertising; production and synthesis of art, typography, copy and design; emphasizes newspaper, magazine, direct mail, poster and point-of-purchase advertising. Prerequisite: JOUR 210 or approval of instructor. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

370. Introduction to Mass Media Research. (3-0). Credit 3.

Research methods most commonly employed in mass media research; design of experimental, survey, field, and content analysis studies; applications to problems in broadcasting, print, advertising, and public relations. Prerequisite: JOUR 321 or 322 or 323 or 324. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

401. Mass Media and Technological Change. (3-0). Credit 3.

Social, political and economic implications of new media technologies in satellite, cable, broadcasting and print systems; government and private sector roles in regulation, policy and management; emerging technologies in an historical context. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor, 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

406. International Communication. (3-0). Credit 3.

Theoretical, pragmatic and ethical issues related to the use of mass media to reach an international or cross-cultural audience, including cultural differences, comparative media systems, development communication, patterns of world news flow, political propaganda, impact of international advertising. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor, 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

407. Women, Minorities and the Mass Media. (3-0). Credit 3.

The contributions of women and ethnic groups to the evolution of the media; the portrayal of women and ethnic groups in the mass media; issues resulting from the recognition of women and ethnic groups as media audiences. 408. Mass Media and Public Opinion. (3-0). Credit 3.

Theories and recent research about the relationship between mass media and public opinion including concepts such as stereotypes, elite opinion, information diffusion, opinion leadership, multi-step flow and agenda setting. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor, 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

409. History of Mass Media. (3-0). Credit 3.

Origins and development of the mass media, their influence on social, political and economic change; their role in maintaining the status quo; history of mass communication from several competing historical and sociological perspectives; technological changes critical to the dissemination of information to mass audiences. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor, 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

440. Media and the Community. (3-0). Credit 3.

Function and impact of mass media in the community; forces that shape media content and conduct; evaluation of media performance. Prerequisite: Junior classification or approval of instructor, 2.50 GPR in JOUR 102 and 200 and 203. Majors only or approval of program coordinator.*

484. Internship. Credit 1 to 3.

Directed internship in a private firm or public agency to provide on-the-job experience appropriate to the student's degree program and career objectives. To be taken on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Maximum of 3 credits may apply toward degree. Prerequisites: JOUR 203 and prior approval of internship coordinator.*

485. Directed Studies. Credit 1 to 4 each semester.

Research problems related to communication field. Individual work, fitted to special needs of specific student as determined by his or her interests and aptitude.*
