Freshman Admissions

When all credentials necessary to complete a freshman applicant's file are received during the admission application period, one of the following criteria will be used to determine who will be offered admission:

1. Top 10% Applicants from Texas High Schools

Applicants who are Texas residents or who are enrolled in recognized public or private high schools in Texas with a rank in the top 10% of their high school graduating class will be automatically admitted to Texas A&M University, but not necessarily to the major of choice.

These applicants must submit all required credentials by the closing date in order to qualify for automatic admission.

Choice of major preference will be given to the top 10% applicants who complete their admission application with all required documents on or prior to the early admission closing date of December 1, 2004. Applicants who complete their files after this early admission date will be granted a major based on availability.

2. Academic Admits

Applicants who are Texas residents or who are enrolled in recognized public or private high schools in Texas with a rank in the top 50% of their high school graduating class, achieve a 1300 SAT or 30 ACT and meet minimum course work will be automatically admitted to Texas A&M University, but not necessarily to the major of choice. These applicants must submit all required credentials by the closing date to qualify for automatic admission.

Applicants who are not Texas residents and are enrolled in recognized public or private high schools outside of Texas with a rank in the top 25% of their high school graduating class, achieve a 1300 SAT or 30 ACT and meet minimum course work will be automatically admitted to Texas A&M University, but not necessarily to the major of choice. These applicants must submit all required credentials by the closing date to qualify for automatic admission.

Choice of major preference will be given to the applicants who complete their admission application with all required documents on or prior to the early admission closing date of December 1, 2004. Applicants who complete their file after this early admission date will be granted a major based on availability.

3. Other Applicants

Applicants not meeting the above requirements will have their complete application file reviewed to make an admission decision. Factors considered are:

A. College Preparatory Course Work

  • Four years of college preparatory English
  • Three and a half years of mathematics to include Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II and advanced Math
  • Three years of science with at least two courses from Biology I, Chemistry I or Physics I

Only in exceptional cases will students be admitted without these minimum requirements. Most applicants who are offered admission will have taken courses well beyond the minimum and will have taken advantage of the most challenging courses their high schools offer.

We also recommend:

  • Two years of the same foreign language.

Graduation from Texas A&M University requires that a student to complete two years of the same foreign language in high school or one year of the same foreign language at the college or university level. Completion of these courses in high school is highly recommended.

B. Class Rank and Standardized Test Scores

Most applicants who are offered admission present an official class rank and test score that meet or exceed one of the following combinations:

  Class Rank

SAT I

ACT

  First quarter
920
19
  Second quarter
1050
23
  Third or fourth quarter
1180
26
