Services for Students
Center for Academic Enhancement
The Center for Academic Enhancement (CAE), located in the Blocker building, administers and coordinates retention and academic support programs for students at Texas A&M University.
The Center offers credit-bearing courses including CAEN 101: Application of Learning Theories to College Studies, which examines critical theories of learning with application to academic performance, CAEN 102: Career Awareness, which explores the planning of career and life goals, the acquisition of marketable skills and the realities of the new professional’s life, and a special topics course: Introduction to Scholarly Research, which is designed primarily for first- and second-year students to provide a better understanding of the purposes of research, develop critical thinking skills and the ability to organize and access information, gain knowledge of print, electronic and other resources pertinent to research efforts, and develop awareness of legal and ethical issues.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered for selected course sections. Sessions are led by a peer who has successfully completed the course, is approved by the course instructor and is trained by professional staff to assist students in processing material, preparing for exams and discussing and comparing lecture notes and reading assignments. All students enrolled in the course section are eligible to attend the free SI study sessions.
The Independent Study Lab is available for students needing assistance in reading, writing, mathematics and study skills. Tutoring in math and science is available at no cost to students. Student tutors are trained and supervised by CAE faculty. Services are provided on a drop-in basis or by appointment. Self-help resources for standardized test preparation or earning course credit through credit by examination are available. In addition, students have access to personal computers and educational software.
