Curriculum in Management

The B.B.A. degree in Management offers a broad range of career opportunities. A management student develops the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, organize, make decisions, communicate and lead effectively in work settings. As such, it affords the student maximum choice flexibility of jobs, industries and organizations.

Elective Tracks in Management. Management students must select nine hours of directed electives from a set of courses within an elective track. Directed electives must be chosen in consultation with and approved by the head of the department or designee. A list of acceptable electives is available from either the College Undergraduate Program Office (Room 209, Wehner Building) or the Department of Management office.

Consulting Track. Regardless of their size or industry, businesses must be proactive in improving their efficiency, processes and overall performance in order to remain competitive in today's complex business environment. Students specializing in this track will be prepared to provide internal or external business solutions to organizations that lack necessary resources, require expertise in a specific area, or that have industry-specific concerns. Topics covered in the consulting track include organizational design, change and development; managing technology; project management; and special topics concerning the consulting process.

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Track. The entrepreneurship and small business track is designed for students interested in the conception of a business idea, including the actual start up of the venture, to the unique aspects of managing and growing small businesses. The entrepreneurial process includes topics such as matching individual skills and attributes with requirements of the venture; evaluating the viability, growth potential and markets for the venture; securing financing; and beginning operations. The small business process includes topics such as planning; human resources management; ethics; organizational controls; marketing management; financial analysis; risk management; securing capital; and franchising, family business and succession.

Human Resource Management Track. The field of human resource management (HRM) has increased in strategic importance to businesses and other organizations in recent years. As such, it represents a developing and expanding field providing multiple career opportunities. Professional positions in HRM include the fields of compensation and benefits, training, employee selection, labor relations, human resources research and equal employment opportunity. The increased emphasis on human resources development and need for improved productivity make this a vital and important field.

Pre-Law Track. The pre-law track in management is designed for students interested in furthering their education through law school and who are interested in corporate law, labor law or other areas of business law. With growing international joint ventures and increased merger and acquisition activity in recent years, an even greater importance has been placed on the field of corporate law. A combined education in business management and law with a solid liberal arts base provides the necessary ingredients for success in this field.
