Intercollegiate Athletics

Texas A&M University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Big 12 Conference, which includes 12 major universities--Texas A&M University, Baylor University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas Tech University, University of Colorado, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma and The University of Texas at Austin.

Athletic teams at Texas A&M are known as Aggies, and the official school colors are maroon and white.

The athletic department is composed of 21 teams--12 women's and nine men's sports. All but equestrian and archery compete in the Big 12 Conference.

The Big 12 sponsors championships, and the Aggies participate in nine men's sports: football, baseball, basketball, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross country, swimming and diving and tennis. Texas A&M has enjoyed a successful men's athletic program through the years. The Aggies won the 1998 Big 12 Championship in football and advanced to the Bowl Championship Series. Texas A&M has won two Big 12 South titles in football. The Aggie baseball team posted back-to-back Championships in 1998 and 1999 and advanced to the College World Series in 1999. The men's tennis team won the 2001 Big 12 Championship and also won the Big 12 Tournament for the third time. The tennis facility played host to the 2002 NCAA Championships and the swimming and diving facility hosted the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The men's swimming and diving team placed 11th in the country in 2001.

As a charter member of the Southwest Conference, the football team won 18 championships, 11 basketball, 17 outdoor track and field, one indoor track and field, 14 cross country, 10 golf, three swimming and diving, 15 baseball and one tennis championship.

The Big 12 sponsors championships, and the Aggies participate in 10 women's sports: basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and soccer. The two newest women's sports are equestrian and archery which compete on the NCAA varsity level, but the Big 12 Conference does not sponsor championships in those events. The women's soccer team won the 2002 Big 12 Championship and the squad has participated in the NCAA playoffs for six straight years, including "Elite Eight" finishes the past two years. The women's golf team won the 1998 Big 12 Championship crown. The women's softball team produced the last team national championship with the 1982 AIAW National Championship as well as the 1983 and 1986 NCAA Championships. The women's volleyball team has reached the NCAA playoffs 10 straight years and finished in the "Sweet 16" four times, including two "Elite Eight" finishes.

In the Southwest Conference days, the women's golf team won the 1985 SWC title and the women's tennis team won the 1986 SWC crown. The women's basketball team posted its best finish in 1993-94 advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The 1994-95 squad won the WNIT National Championship and the 1995-96 squad won the final SWC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The 1999-2000 school year marked the 25th Anniversary of Women's Athletics at Texas A&M.
